The main point that McBride is making about the concept of black power is that he is only defined to what others define him as only if he lets them. Society around him is putting pressure on him that telling him that the black power is more dominant and that he should subside to the pressure.
It is an idea that defines him because once again it is only something that defines you if you let it define you. He is getting mixed ideas allover the place as to what he should do, and how he is suppose to define himself in society. It isn’t a concept because it isn’t a set thing that cannot be changed and it isn’t set and stone. In addition it isn’t his identity because he is confused on what he should follow because society is telling him to go in a million different directions, also it isn’t what he defines himself as.

The way that I feel about this story is that he is getting pulled in a million different directions and he doesn’t know how to handle all of this at once. He is confused on what his family is defining him as and what his family wants him to be.  He is so focused on the black power that is being instilled on him that he cant even open his eyes to everything around him and get different ideas because his mom is giving him restrictions on life and what he can and cannot do, while in reality he needs to be able to find himself and figure it our for himself without a million voices telling him what to do.
